Walter Rau Lebensmittelwerke – past and present

The foundation stone of our company was laid over 110 years ago. The company founder, Walter Rau, bought a small dairy in Hilter near the Teutoburg Forest in 1903, and began the production of spreadable fats.

Over the years, the production and range have been significantly extended, and the former family-run business has become a well-known and successful manufacturer of margarines and cooking fats. Due to their high level of acceptance by customers and consumers, RAU products quickly found widespread distribution.

    WALTER RAU founds the company. Start of margarine production in the Sunderhof buildings in Hilter.

    1929

    Acquisition of the Simons mill in Neuss.

1950 - 1959
  • 1951

    New logos and ads determine the image of Walter Rau Lebensmittelwerke in its portrayal and marketing.

    1954

    Acquisition of the majority shareholding of Hansa Mühle AG, Hamburg. Founding of Klose-Spedition, Hilter.

    1957

    Establishment of our own packaging plant for the manufacture of margarine tubs in Hilter.

  • 1959

    The time has come: as part of the health revolution, the first Reform Margarine hits the food retailers.

    The first Deli Reform Margarine – and thus the foundation of the entire range – was available in the cube pack from then on.

    Founding of HANSA-TIEFKÜHLMENÜ, Hamburg.

    1969

    Commissioning of the HANSA production facilities for frozen products in Hilter.

    Deli Reform was given a new look with the introduction of the 250 g round tub.

  • 1970

    Deep-fat fryers make their way into German kitchens, Walter Rau Lebensmittelwerke supplies the perfect pure vegetable cooking oil, "Cremana Frit".

    1971

    Introduction of the first pastry margarine as a puff pastry sheet for the bakery trade.

  • 1973

    Introduction of Deli Halbarine – the first low-fat margarine in Germany.

1980 - 1999
  • 1980

    Founding of Walter Rau Verfahrenstechnik GmbH. A service provider company for production technology expertise – from the planning to the commissioning of technical plants.

  • 1991

    Expansion of production into the new federal states through acquisition of Pflanzenfett Velten GmbH, Brandenburg.

    1993

    Deli Reform is now available in the new standard tub size, the so-called 500 g Eurotub, for better placement in the fridge and on the shelves.

    Our vegetable oil, Cremana feine Küche, is a hit for home-cooked food.

  • 1995

    Evolution of the Deli Reform brand to an umbrella brand through the introduction of Deli Reform Die Leichte.

    1998

    Expansion of the umbrella brand though the introduction of Deli Reform Pflanzliches Schmalz, the 100% purely vegetable-based, cholesterol-free alternative to animal lard.

  • 1999

    The Deli Reform brand celebrates its 40th anniversary.

    Focus on the core business through the sale of shares in Neusser Öl und Fett AG.

    HANSA-TIEFKÜHLMENÜ GmbH & Co. KG is hived off.

    Extension of the product range with new innovative products in different sectors, such as pure vegetable lard, vegetable spreads, baking fat spread and oil.

  • 2001

    Deli Reform – Die Gesunde Pflanzencreme is introduced.

    2003

    The cholesterol-lowering low-fat margarine, Deli Reform Active, is introduced under the Deli Reform umbrella brand. It contains plant sterols, thus effectively and measurably lowering cholesterol levels.

  • 2003

    Walter Rau Lebensmittelwerke celebrates its 100-year anniversary on 5 August.

  • 2007

    Market launch of Deli Reform Sommerfrische. A light spread with just 28% fat and a fresh yogurt flavour.

  • 2008

    Walter Rau Lebensmittelwerke joins forces with the world’s leading agricultural and food product manufacturer, Bunge.

  • 2009

    Deli Reform celebrates its birthday. For more than 50 years now, Walter Rau Lebensmittelwerke has been delivering a perfect combination of healthy nutrition and great flavour with Deli Reform.

    Expansion of the range to include 1 l vegetable oils in shatterproof PET bottles.
